Auditor competence criteria

The criteria are established for every complexity level as determined by the complexity matrix.

Work experience in the management system field shall include one of the following, as a minimum:

  • managing operations in compliance with technical control requirements;
  • implementation and maintenance of management systems;
  • monitoring compliance with law and regulations on behalf of a regulating body;
  • participation in a management system audit team on behalf of a certification body;
  • second-party management system audits;
  • provision of management system consultancy.

Management system related training shall include:

  • open training
  • in-house training
  • expert briefings
  • on-the-job training
  • self paced study
  • participation at seminaries
  • conferences
  • calibration meetings etc,

Knowledge and skills of auditors in the management systems field shall include process, product or service operational control methods and techniques.

Background education
  • Secondary education (as a minimum)
Total work experience
  • 5 years in technical, managerial or professional position (reduced by 1 year if appropriate post-secondary education completed)
Work experience in management systems field
  • At least 2 years of the total 5 years
Business sector & management practices, client products, processes and organization specific  knowledge and skills
  • vocational qualification/ training or university degree and work experience for at least 6 months; or
  • work experience for at least 12 months; or
  • for indirect/related scopes – 1 consultancy projects or 2 full audits
  • vocational qualification/ training or university degree and work experience for at least 12 months; or
  • work experience for at least 24 months.
  • for indirect/related scopes – 2 consultancy projects or 4 full audits
  • vocational qualification/ training or university degree and work experience for at least 24 months; or
  • work experience for at least 48 months.
Auditor Training
  • 40 hours (third-party auditing course) or 16 hours in the second discipline (i.e. management system related course)
Auditing experience
  • 5 complete audits; and
  • At least 2 audits of 2 days minimum duration on site
